Matera 2026 – Opening Ceremony

Large-scale laser projection and audio-reactive light performance

Coding the Mediterranean soul into a synesthetic experience of light and stone

Ancient landscapes shaped by real-time sound and generative light

For the finale of Matera 2026 – Mediterranean Capital of Culture and Dialogue, Ultravioletto transformed the calcarenite cliffs of Sasso Caveoso into a living canvas of light. Under the creative direction of Studio Antani, the performance explored the relationship between ancestral roots and digital futures. It began with traditional Mediterranean sounds performed by Pino Basile from the rocky spur of Montirone.

Coding the Mediterranean soul into a synesthetic experience of light and stone

These organic vibrations were captured and processed in real time, blending with electronic textures by Daniele Antezza. Ultravioletto translated this evolving soundscape into generative laser patterns, transforming frequency into movement and color. The result was a synesthetic landscape, where light responded instantly to sound, unfolding across the Murgia as a dynamic, living system. A poetic reading of Matera emerged: a city carved from stone, shaped by time, and projected toward new forms of perception through light.
